I was tasked with designing an interpretive cover for the novel "The Story of an Hour". I wanted the design to communicate the themes of the book: life, marriage and time while simultaneously conveying the expressive mood of the story. In order to blend these elements, I illustrated a heart with a ring wrapped around it, squeezing it. I decided to keep it looking hand made and vintage because the story takes place in the 1800s. The heart represents the protagonist’s heart condition while the ring represents her attitude towards the oppressive nature of her marriage. The heart also takes the shape of an hourglass, representing the hour during which the story takes place as well as the passage of time.
